Any discussion of wallcovering would be woefully remiss without mention of Patty Madden. A design pioneer, Patty has been at the fore of expanding the wallcovering industry from its roots in foundational gravure fabrication into the emerging digital revolution.
Despite family roots in the garment industry, it would be an interior design degree and her first big break in design and product specification that would set her on an entirely different path. As part of New York’s Walker Group - a retail interior design company - Patty would discover her aptitude for product development.
The absence of contemporary designs in wallcovering, textile, and floor covering proved to be the mother of invention. Unwittingly, Patty was in the right place at the right time. Her designs opened the industry’s eyes to unrealized potential and garnered growing accolades. Her designs were instantly recognizable, fresh, and several of her products were included in the numerous running lines of prominent wallcovering companies. It wasn’t long before the increased demand enabled Patty to leave the interior design business, and, in 1984, she established Patty Madden Inc. to design product full time.
For a commercial artist who had perfected the complex analog process of surface design, the arrival of digital printing was a true gift, with its unimaginable color capacity, boundless scale possibilities and near immediate rendering potential. Patty was ready to integrate the science with her substrate. The result was groundbreaking product with nuanced characteristics exclusive to Patty Madden. This collection is a tribute to the influential power of her design and a testimony to the fact that possibility is limited only by one’s dreams.
