As both a designer and fine artist, Patty Madden creates beautiful, sophisticated designs. Her talents sweep across the creative spectrum from interior design and decorative products, to 3D engraving methods and 3D printed fine art wall sculptures. Patty is a renowned designer, known to create works of art that manifest into blended displays of artistry and technology. This year, Patty’s creations are featured in four new Koroseal textile wallcovering patterns.
Growing up surrounded by luxury design and creativity, Patty developed an artistic eye at an early age. Patty’s family was full of artists. Her father designed and built luxury yachts, while her mother also worked on large yachts in interior design. Additionally, Patty’s grandmother, the late Martha Phillips, immersed Patty in the couture fashion world. Martha was a trailblazing fashion maven and owned a renowned couture clothing salon, “Martha” on Worth Avenue in Palm Beach. Spending time at her grandmother’s shop, Patty was engulfed with works of masterful designers like Valentino and Halston.
“I designed and created from the time I could hold a pencil, never going anywhere without my sketch pad.” It was within the walls of “Martha” that Patty began her talent as a designer, sketching models adorned in exquisite fashions.
Patty’s early exposure to high-end design and couture fashion fueled her passions. At Parsons School of Design, she was able to receive a formal education and further honed her design skills. Ultimately, Patty diverged from her initial path in fashion design to explore other creative career opportunities, and transitioned into interior design. After designing large commercial retail spaces, Patty later ventured into creating decorative products for commercial and high-end residential projects. After discovering her love of creating wallcovering and upholstery products, Patty decided to focus on interior product design exclusively.
Over the years, Patty has remained at the forefront of design, embracing new technologies to extend her creativity even further. Her creative vision blends high-end artistry with innovative technology. Paired with her passion for mindfulness, she creates designs that are not just aesthetically pleasing, but also promote a state of well-being.
“Everything that I do reflects back to design in one way or another. It is who I am. Taking a 2D pattern and reimagining it into a 3D wire sculpture allows me to explore the spatial dynamics of designs, understand shadows and light, and even consider the movement around a piece.”
In her work, Patty utilizes new analog and digital printing technologies, as well as a 3D engraving method she pioneered herself. Her latest collections contain unique digital wall murals, featuring artwork derived from animations.
Patty’s passion doesn’t stop there - she continues to evolve as an artist everyday. By leveraging the knowledge she has obtained from working in the 3D space, Patty has created a new series of 3D printed fine art wall sculptures she has named, “Wire Art” - a new medium creating patterns and shapes that are defined by the multidimensional composition of geometric and “Voronoi” wire structures.
“I wanted to experience what it would be like to be inside the spaces of my 2D patterns. ”
Through Patty’s innovation and passion, others are able to explore art unlike ever before. The “Wire Art” technique allows one’s imagination to explore the architectural structure of shapes as if they are from the inside, looking out.
By combining digital technology with geometric design, Patty holds the unique ability to use light and shadow to evoke delicate weaves, architectural trusses, and lace-like structures. Often, her works can create an interplay of light that manifests into an intricate web of shadows, dancing across walls and surrounding surfaces, providing the world a one-of-a-kind visual experience.
We met with Patty to learn more about her designs, approach, and inspiration. See what else she had to say!
Patty: Design is as much about solving problems as it is about aesthetics. Good design not only looks appealing, but also meets the needs of the space, and the people within it. It’s about finding that sweet spot where form meets function, and where beauty is synonymous with usability. This mindset can guide a designer through countless decisions, ensuring that their work is not only stunning, but also purposeful and relevant.
Patty: Creating 3D animations for meditations is a deeply immersive pastime that has a profound influence on my design work. This practice combines visual artistry with mindfulness, which helps in developing a keen sense of how colors, movement, and form affect emotions and states of mind. This experience allows me to bring a sense of tranquility and flow into my designs, inspiring patterns that embody a sense of calm and balance while also providing a sense of visual harmony. Understanding how people engage with a meditative space can also translate into creating designs that are not just aesthetically pleasing, but also promote well-being. My animations are in a lab where I experiment with how visual elements can influence mood and atmosphere—insights that are invaluable in any design-related field.
Patty: The design technique I like creating is a 3-dimensional illusion on a 2- dimensional surface. This technique resonates because it challenges the viewer’s perception, adding depth and dynamism to otherwise flat surfaces. The interplay of color, light, and shadow is at the core of this technique. By skillfully manipulating these elements, I can suggest volume, texture, and layers, which invites a tactile response. It makes the design interactive; as viewers move and light shifts, so does the appearance of the pattern, which can be both mesmerizing and engaging. This approach also allows for a strong narrative element within the design. For instance, the shadows can imply a source of light within the narrative of the space, while the colors can set a mood or evoke a specific emotion. By combining these, I am not just creating a pattern, but crafting an experience. In the context of wall coverings and upholstery, this technique is especially valuable because it adds depth to interiors without the need for additional decorative elements, making it an efficient and impactful design solution.
Patty: I find motivation in the pursuit of innovation and the satisfaction that comes from creating solutions that improve people’s lives. The desire to learn and grow, to push the boundaries of what is possible, and to leave a meaningful impact through my work, drives me to continually evolve. In my specific role as a creator of 3D-like designs in 2D spaces, I am particularly interested in advancements in visualization software; emerging materials and printing technologies; and psychological research into how people perceive space and color. Keeping my finger on the pulse of these areas can provide fresh inspiration, and keep my designs cutting edge.
