Designer Report: BDNY Deep Dive into Design Style

The Koroseal Design team was enlightened during their participation in this year’s Boutique Design New York, commonly known as BDNY. As shared in the Design Report: Inside BDNY, we witnessed several new crave-worthy trends, one of which was the experiential themes centered around wellness and community. Our designers took a closer look at this new thematic design style, and how it will transform this year.

Authenticity: Wellness, Nature, & Community

Throughout BDNY and beyond, there is a focus on authentic expression. Creators are working to establish a connection to past eras and support a continuation of wellness. A strong focus has been placed on experiential lifestyles, like camping or more-elevated events and experiences outdoors. These community-based spaces nurture connections with humanity and the environment, providing a sense of nostalgia influenced by past eras; emerging back into future trends, and fascinations of our younger generations. New products feature elements of the past, providing consumers with authentic connections they feel humbled by.

The wellness and overall health benefits of nature continue to evolve as a slow and steady transition from previous years, and will continue into 2025. Timeless aesthetics like earthly tones, soft textures, cozy neutrals, and curved shapes resonate in today’s designs. Some creators are seen leveraging new innovations to provide a sense of motion in their spaces. Designers also evoke an airy dreamlike openness, supporting the concept of a healthy space and relaxed atmosphere.

BDNY Trends 1

From a design perspective, the simplicity of nature translates into minimalism, helping to remove visual noise that can create a stressful environment. Minimalistic design is often found in the form of soft curves, neutral soothing colors, and soft texture to the touch. This style often includes stone, wood, and rattan in surface materials, and botanic shapes and imagery like mushrooms, florals, and grasses. The uniqueness of community and appreciation of the outdoors provide a sense of security and sophistication. We also see the continued use of open floor plans, highlighted in ambient lighting with vintage accessories to help embrace sustainability and create a sense of calm within the space.

Styles from past eras will likely always be a driving force in the inspiration for future design. William Morris’s intricate style, a most celebrated approach to organic design, is ushering us into a Post-Modern revival. Through the use of asymmetrical shapes and a mash-up of materials, we are able to escape formality and are inspired by new designs reminiscent of the retro styles of the 70’s and 80’s. Rounding out a nod to this era and highlighting sustainability, we also witness vivid spot color and exaggeration of salvaged and distressed finishes. In tandem, we are still seeing the modern sleek lines and glamorous repetition of geometric form inspired by details from the Art Deco period. The serpentine accents in shiny metals and contemporary glam provide us with a more exotic style - something to watch evolve in the new year. Symmetry and fluted architectural accents are utilized to provide order. Deep rich color tones, glossy metals, and lush velvet fabrics symbolize prosperity in the year to come.

It wouldn’t be appropriate to discuss design style without recognizing the use of woods. Wood is a key element of design, utilized everywhere, and appears in all trends from Retro to Wellness. The lasting presence of Mid-Century Modern design in recent years has helped to spotlight wood as a simple and functional element to create geometric shapes, or bend to the curved details of the modern style. We have seen it drench walls, floors, and ceilings as an architectural backdrop and suspect this trend to continue into 2025 with even more exploration in geometric and organic patterns, paired with metallic accents. While lighter tones have been more dominant, recently, we are seeing a resurgence of darker grains like walnut, as well as darker stains in rich warm shades and understated blacks. Woods with their natural and organic features create a unique presentation of handmade quality across all projects. They make an incredible feature wall and mix elegantly in contrast to the soft cozy fabrics seen in furniture. Woven in basketweaves and accented with metal, wood is a classic staple here to stay.

This coming year, as we continue to see contrasting styles of design, we look forward to watching new patterns evolve from designers utilizing undertones of inspiration from design leaders of the past. Custom handcrafted materials of today’s talented artisans are sure to inspire future designers, as the evolution continues. Minimalist or maximalist, there will be something new offered for everyone to create, accent, or update their space.
