New York Fashion Week, or NYFW, is a bi-annual event that showcases leading designers from around the world. Fashions revealed at NYFW set the stage for design trends that expand beyond the runway. Our design team is constantly analyzing trends from these highly transformative shows, how they inspire designs all around us, and how they translate into our favorite space - interiors.
With NYFW ending just this past week, our design team is in high-inspo mode! This February’s “Ready to Wear” fashion show, highlighted corporate workwear, suits and new applications of these ideas across fashion. Our designers identified a few key trends to keep a pulse on this year.
The theme “Ready to Wear” was focused on core influences of men’s suiting, corporate attire, and contrasting feminine vs. masculine fashion. The concept of blending feminine and masculine looks is also a trend we see taking shape in interior design through the mixing of manly and effeminate pieces, like leather and lace. Interior spaces are also pulling in androgynous luxury finishes, seeking balance versus the contrasts of the typical male-female dichotomy.

The use of various textiles were featured throughout fashion collections, displaying not only memorable looks, but also tactical touches. Designs by Libertine, Ana Sui, Collina Strada and Tanya Taylor displayed some of our favorites. From high-shine fabrics and leather suiting, to embellished tweed, denim and velvet, the use of recognizable textures was intriguing. As we highlighted in our Inside BDNY blog post, interior designers are also enjoying playing with textile finishes. Textural fabrics like white and cream boule, and deep hued velvets are used to help support cozy, warm, inviting spaces - tactile to the touch.

Through the use of common silhouettes, many fashions featured comforting and familiar designs, applied in new articulations. High-profile designers such as Christian Siriano, Donna Karan New York, A. Potts, Luar, and Tory Burch were all seen sporting familiar outlines in new ways; exploring the use of draping, relaxed fits, full fits, non-functional sleeves, asymmetrical shapes, slouchy fits and cinching details. Similar silhouettes can be found in upcoming interior designs that emulate draped techniques with soft line looks, or high shine elements.

One of the most compelling trends we saw was the striking use of pops of colors and bold patterns. Models walking the runway sported fun striping, workwear plaid, pinstripes, and even floral and animal prints - including pheasant and traditional leopard. A tantalizing feel was conveyed through the use of darker colors paired with accents of eye-popping color, like lime greens and orangey reds. More traditional hues, ranging from true red to neutrals, were also used to add bold statements on elegant darker shades. Interior designs are leveraging similar techniques, incorporating colorblocked striping, classic pinstripes, and even plaids, into walls and upholstery. Similar to the fashion pieces witnessed on the runway, rooms are taking on fresh statements with splashes of new color to accentuate a space.
