The Color Experience: Beyond the Palette

How color can shape the spaces we create—and the experiences they inspire.

Have you ever walked into a space and immediately felt something? Before you notice the details, you notice the feeling. Maybe the space feels energizing, calm, welcoming, or unexpected. You may not immediately know why—but color, pattern, texture, light, and material are already working together to create that response.

As designers, we’re constantly translating ideas into spaces. Color is one of the first tools we reach for—but maybe it can tell us more than we realize. What if color isn’t just something we choose for a space, but something that helps shape the experience of that space?

Beyond the Palette

Color can do more than define the look of a space. It can create energy, spark curiosity, encourage connection, or bring a sense of calm and clarity. And when color meets pattern, texture, and material, something more begins to happen. The palette becomes an atmosphere. The atmosphere becomes an experience.

That’s the idea behind The Color Experience. It starts with our individual relationship with color and uses that as a way to explore the kinds of experiences we naturally gravitate toward creating. Not a personality test. Not a fashion statement. Just another way to think about the role color can play in the spaces we design.

From Color to Energy

Different color stories can create very different feelings. Some feel fresh and expressive, opening the door to possibility. Others are bold and energized, creating momentum and encouraging interaction. Warm, organic palettes can make a space feel familiar and inviting, while quieter, more refined combinations can bring a sense of balance and clarity.

These different approaches inspired four design energies: Visionary, Catalyst, Connector, and Strategist. Each offers a different perspective on how color, pattern, texture, and material can influence the experience of a space.

Visionary — Inspires possibility.
Visionary spaces feel fresh, expressive, and a little unexpected—where ideas can evolve and take shape. Layered materials, expressive patterns, and unexpected combinations create an atmosphere open to what comes next.

Strategist — Creates clarity.
Strategist spaces bring a quieter kind of energy. Balanced color, subtle texture, and thoughtful material choices create an atmosphere that feels composed, focused, and intentional.

Connector — Creates belonging.
Connector spaces make people want to stay awhile. Warm color, natural texture, and tactile materials create a sense of familiarity, comfort, and connection.

Catalyst — Inspires action.
Catalyst spaces create momentum. Bold color, confident contrast, and purposeful materials capture attention and encourage people to engage, interact, and move forward.

None is better than another. They’re simply different ways of thinking about how a space can feel and what it can inspire.

From Color Story to Spatial Story

This is where it gets interesting. Because color is only the beginning.

Color becomes pattern.
Pattern becomes texture.
Texture becomes material.
And together, they become a space.

A Visionary color story might become a creative environment that gives ideas room to grow. A Catalyst palette might shape a gathering space that energizes people and encourages interaction. A Connector palette might become a place that feels warm, familiar, and easy to settle into. A Strategist palette might create a sense of balance that helps people focus.

There are no formulas for how those ideas must come together. The opportunity is in exploring the possibilities and seeing where the color story can take the design.

The Experience Is What Comes Next

For designers, color is rarely an isolated decision. It becomes part of a larger story—one that unfolds through pattern, texture, material, architecture, and ultimately, the people who experience the space.

Maybe the most interesting part of color isn’t the color itself. It’s what happens when that color begins to shape a place—and the people experiencing it.

Discover Your Color. Discover Your Energy. Discover Your Environment.

The Color Experience is an invitation to explore that connection—to start with color and see where it leads.

Because a beautiful space is only part of the story. It’s also about how that space makes people feel.

Your color story is the beginning. The experience is what happens next.
