Mandy Budan is an award-winning landscape artist from Canada. Her designs are ultimately unique, utilizing abstract shapes to create original works of art that transform into a realistic landscape scene when viewed from a distance. The beauty and originality of Mandy’s works are inspiring to many, as her paintings can be found in both private and corporate collections around the world. We are pleased to share that her designs are also featured in some of Koroseal’s latest Digital Wallcovering patterns!
Always interested in fine art, Mandy was destined to be an artist herself. She began to pursue a degree in graphic design in college, but quickly found she craved more artistic freedom and continued to pursue a path painting full time. Aside from art classes in high school, and a few graphic design courses in college, she is mostly self-taught. Mandy has engulfed herself in art and has naturally thrived throughout her design journey.
Utilizing abstract impressionism, Mandy creates works of art that appear realistic from a distance, and transform into an intertwined collection of abstract shapes when seen up close. In Mandy’s paintings, both the near and far views of the work are of equal importance, providing the audience an exquisite viewing journey.
“My art style has changed in the proficiency of technique, but I’m still approaching creating art the same way I did as a student; looking at the little pieces that make up the world around us, and putting them together in different ways.”
By drawing on her extensive background in graphic and web design, Mandy leverages a unique combination of shapes and colors to reveal the dualistic images in her paintings. Her love for reading science fiction and fantasy also helps to fuel her innate ability to look at the world differently, and perhaps uncover things others may not see on the surface. Viewers are mesmerized by the complex beauty she is able to craft into her designs.
Influenced by the works of other Canadian artists such as the iconic Group of Seven, Tom Thomson, Emily Carr, and Bill Reid, Mandy creates paintings that evoke the essence of a specific place, while also standing boldly as non-objective abstract works. Creating unique paintings of this nature would be difficult for most; however, Mandy is driven by inspiration from photographs, sketches, and vivid memories of rich landscapes she has witnessed first-hand. The beautiful Canadian backdrop she sees everyday provides her endless inspiration in and of itself.
We connected with Mandy to learn more about her designs, approach, and inspiration. See what she had to say!
Mandy: Because I’m a fine artist, I don’t really follow trends, rather I look at the last painting I did and try to improve on it for the next one.
Mandy: The use of neutrals with wood and then, sometimes, a small splash of color. I’m seeing this a lot in interior design, and also on the outside of new buildings and renovated homes. I like the focus this design puts on color by surrounding it with neutrals.
Mandy: I always create a painting first and then look at ways that it can be used functionally. I need to be happy with the final work as a painting, or I don’t think it will be as effective as anything else.
