This month, our Design Team would like to highlight the trend we fondly refer to as Retro Reboot. Learn more about this fun design style, and how you, too, can pull Retro Reboot into your design space.
Retro Reboot brings back the lively spirit of past decades, and celebrates the art of customization by leveraging familiarity, with a creative twist. It revives a sense of playfulness and freedom through nostalgic colors, materials, and accessories.
Bold teal, warm coral, vibrant red, bright purple, acid lime green, and denim blue comprise a refreshing, but familiar color palette that helps uplift and motivate our spirits. These eye-catching hues are reminiscent of childhood memories, while creating a "newstalgia" that bridges the past and present. Retro Reboot evokes excitement, encouraging human expression with its vibrant colors and sense of whimsy.
Our team loves the way Retro Reboot reimagines the past in contemporary styles - converging the old and new. We have seen Retro Reboot theming appear across the design spectrum, from interior designs to innovative product executions. What we love the most is the way Retro Reboot embraces nostalgia, and creates an environment that is comforting, familiar, and content amongst the chaos of the modern world. It pulls us out of the chaos, and into a vibrant, fun retreat.
Although Retro Reboot is inspired by mid-century modern designs, Y2K fashion, and classic 80's and 90's styles; it comes to life through a modern spin, utilizing sustainable materials. Thrifting and repair culture thrive within this trend. We love the applications of vintage home décor pieces and fashion that are not only able to be reused, but updated, or repaired, to create new, unique pieces of art.
The color palette is eclectic - bringing an energetic, carefree atmosphere that invites playfulness into any space. We see more and more colorful materials, patterns, and products emerging, and anticipate this trend to continue throughout 2025 and 2026. More fun colors; bold nostalgic, patterns; and playful design themes are sure to bring joy to future spaces!
As our team observed at the 2025 HD Expo, one of the main styles revisited this year is Art Deco. We have seen an abundance of modern geometric designs taking shape in various forms, while many Gen Z'ers are embracing 80's and 90's retro styles. Although this generational group may not have lived through the time periods they are emulating, they enjoy the nostalgia and romanticizing how fun the time periods may have been. Retro Reboot allows us to relax, and become part of previous generations we wish to revisit.
